SCB EASY APP

SUMMARY

SUMMARY

The client is a leading bank in Thailand with the objective of delivering a new banking platform.

With a plan to reduce the number of tasks in the bank branch offices, the mobile application has the goal of processing all the financial operations offered by the bank, like transfer money to others, pay bills, top-up the mobile phone...

Within a team of 100+ people, including product owners from 20 different bank departments, developers, and a great team of service and visual designers, during my intern, I was the person in charge of delivering the final working prototype.

MY ROLE

I was part of a team with 20+ designers (Visual, Service, UX...) and I was in charge of compiling the entire app prototype

DELIVERABLES

  • Working prototype

  • Design Validation

SCOPE

Mobile banking App

*Due to NDA I can only share the process, and all the images are blurred.

PROCESS

  1. Research (Who are the users? What are the goals?)

  2. Document

  3. Collaborate and build relationships (PO, Devs, Users..)

  4. Create low-fi design and socialize with stakeholders

  5. Iterate & test

  6. Create final prototype and socialize with stakeholders

  7. Iterate & test

  8. Handover for implementation

  9. Support implementation

AGILE

  • Daily standups and debrief

  • Around 20 designers in the team ( Service, Visual, UX...)

  • Fortnightly sprints

SUMMARY
PROTOTYPING

BUILDING THE WORKING PROTOTYPE

I joined the project for a limited time of two months, at the beginning of Wave 2.

My role was to build a full working prototype of the brand new application.

It has been an invaluable experience because I could take my prototyping ability to the next level and learn how to work on a complex project with tight deadlines.

PROTOTYPE OBJECTIVES

  • User testing

  • Show the bank CEO the upcoming features design

  • Document the final designs for the development (functions, final layout, transitions, ...)

CHALLENGES

  • Building a relationship with all the stakeholders to have the complete information

  • Tight deadline and sudden changes due to afterthoughts or re-prioritization

PROCESS

Part of my challenge was to socialize with different teams in order to combine together each step of the work and to be sure the prototype was corresponding to a unanimous decision.

Without a proper guide, but only the clear goal of making the entire app working prototype I spent part of my time running around the office to ask to every party material, approval and discuss if the output was not clear. I developed a process I followed to complete each functionality.

I collected:

  • Epics and User Stories from the Product Owners and Testing team.

  • Use Flows from the Service Design team.

DESIGN VALIDATION

OVERVIEW

We did design validation studies on all to the new function designed.

My teammate ( UX Designer) and I, investigated 4 functions.

We conducted a Guerrilla Testing in the office building, interviewing 20 people for each session.
The participants ranged from demographics, professions, and they were users of the bank App or customers of competitors too.

The main activities involved:

  • planning the interview

  • A/B testing

  • gathering analyzing the feedbacks

  • present the results and design recommendations

OBJECTIVE

We investigated users preferences regarding:

  • design hierarchy

  • visual elements

  • understandability

  • possible variations

CHALLENGES

  • Cultural and language barrier ( my teammate is Thai, so she behaved as interpreter )

  • Make sure with all the stakeholder of understanding deeply the feature before the testing ( it was not designed by us but by a different team )

OUTCOMES

  • A keynote presentation with the design validation reporting general data about the topic, detail on the user satisfaction and pain points of the current design.
We also included where possible our recommendations to enhance usability or users unveiled needs.

  • The report was presented to the design lead and to all the team. A report with all the function validation was presented by the design lead to the head of the project.

OVERALL LEARNINGS

  • Mediation: it is crucial to mediate between the client request and the final user needs

  • Collaboration: make it work through a large team with different nationalities, roles, and goals.

  • Agile process, department responsibilities and ownership

  • Working with strict deadlines and no-excuses delivery timing
